Kenyans can expect slightly lower fuel costs this month following the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) latest review. The Authority has announced small but welcome decreases in fuel prices for the period from 15th September to 14th October 2025, offering some relief to motorists and households navigating high living costs.

    Price Overview in Nairobi:

    • Super Petrol: KKSh 184.52 per litre  ( ⬇️ –KSh 0.79)
    • Diesel: KSh 171.47 per litre  ( ⬇️ –KSh 0.11)
    • Kerosene: KSh 154.78 per litre  ( ⬇️ –KSh 0.80)

Previous prices (15th August – 14th September 2025): Super Petrol KSh 185.31, Diesel KSh 171.58, Kerosene KSh 155.58

“Finally, some good news at the pump. It may not be huge, but it makes a difference.”

    Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment

EPRA attributes the slight reductions in pump prices to lower landed costs of imported petroleum products during the review period. The landed cost of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene declined marginally in line with easing global oil prices. Murban crude oil prices softened in August, creating room for modest downward adjustments. Additionally, the Kenyan Shilling remained relatively stable against the US Dollar, helping to cushion consumers from any external cost spikes. These combined factors resulted in the small but welcome price decreases announced for September 2025.

    EPRA’s Pricing Methodology

EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers and transporters.

    📝 Why It Matters

This price cut offers some relief to motorists, public transport operators, and households already grappling with high living costs. Lower fuel prices often reduce transport expenses and can ease inflationary pressure in the short term.

    📈 What’s Behind These Prices?

EPRA’s adjustments are influenced by several factors:

    • Global Crude Prices – Murban Crude Oil prices increased from USD 63.62 per barrel in July to USD 69.81 in August 2025.
    • Landed Cost – Super Petrol down 0.46%, Diesel down 3.38%, Kerosene down 2.93%.
    • Forex Rates – The Kenyan Shilling remained stable, with a slight increase in the USD/KES rate, which rose from 129.58 in July to 129.62 in August.

💡 EPRA’s pricing approach ensures balance between consumer protection and supply chain sustainability.

Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximise Every Drop

Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:

    • Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%.
    • Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
    • Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
