EPRA Maintains Fuel Prices for May 2025
Steady Fuel Prices Amid Global Swings
In its latest monthly review, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has kept fuel prices unchanged for the May 15 to June 14 cycle. While global crude oil prices and the cost of fuel imports have dropped, EPRA has opted to stabilize local pump prices. The move provides motorists, transporters, and businesses with a continued window of predictability despite the fluctuating international market.
Price Overview in Nairobi:
- Super Petrol: KSh 174.63 per litre (unchanged)
- Diesel: KSh 164.86 per litre (unchanged)
- Kerosene: KSh 148.99 per litre (unchanged)
Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment
EPRA’s decision to maintain fuel prices this month stems from a combination of global and local economic factors. The most significant driver is a decrease in the landed cost of imported petroleum products, resulting from falling international oil prices. Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene all recorded reductions ranging from 2.95% to 6.62% in their respective import costs. Additionally, the Kenyan Shilling has remained relatively stable against the US Dollar, helping to cushion domestic consumers from the full impact of international market fluctuations. Despite the reduced import costs, EPRA retained the previous month’s pump prices, likely due to internal revisions in oil marketer margins and inland transport costs.
EPRA’s Pricing Methodology
EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers and transporters.
Why Should You Care?
With the cost of living continuing to pressure households and businesses, the decision to hold prices steady—rather than hike or lower them—brings stability and predictability.
“I’ll take stability over spikes any day. It helps with planning.”

What’s Behind These Prices?
EPRA’s adjustments are influenced by several factors:
- Global Crude Prices – Lower international oil prices are reflected in falling landed costs.
- Landed Cost – Super Petrol down 2.95%, Diesel down 6.62%, Kerosene down 4.52%.
- Forex Rates – A stable Kenyan Shilling helped mitigate potential price swings.
💡 These combined effects were largely neutralized by adjustments in transport margins and oil marketer allowances. This framework ensures fairness—balancing international cost savings with local operational realities.
Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximize Every Drop
Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:
- Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%.
- Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
- Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
