Kenyan motorists are facing a significant price shock this July. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced steep increases in fuel prices for the period from 15th July to 14th August 2025. As of midnight on July 15, motorists in Nairobi will pay more for Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene, marking the steepest one-month hike in over a year amidst global market pressures.

    Price Overview in Nairobi:

    • Super Petrol: KSh 186.31 per litre ( ⬆️ KSh 8.99)
    • Diesel: KSh 171.58 per litre ( ⬆️ KSh 8.67)
    • Kerosene: KSh 156.58 per litre ( ⬆️ KSh9.65)

Previous prices (15th June – 14th July 2025): Super Petrol KSh 177.32, Diesel KSh 162.91, Kerosene KSh 146.93

“This is a big hit—transport costs are already high, and now the pump just went up by nine shillings.”

    Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment

EPRA attributes these steep hikes to a significant jump in the landed cost of imported fuel between May and June 2025. The landed cost of Super Petrol rose 6.45% (US$590.24 to US$628.30 per cubic metre). Diesel increased 6.27%, and Kerosene surged 6.95% over the same period. The regulator also cited rising global crude oil prices—driven by Middle East tensions and supply concerns—as well as relatively stable, but still high, forex rates. These combined pressures were passed on in full to consumers this month.

    EPRA’s Pricing Methodology

EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers and transporters.

    👀 Why Should You Care?

This sharp price hike will impact everyone, from matatu and boda boda riders to delivery fleet operators and everyday commuters. Expect higher costs for transport, more expensive goods, and elevated household budgets across the board.

    📈 What’s Behind These Prices?

EPRA’s adjustments are influenced by several factors:

    • Global Crude Prices – Murban Crude Oil prices decreased from USD 72.63 per barrel in May to USD 67.73 in June 2025.
    • Landed Cost – Super Petrol up 6.45%, Diesel up 6.27%, Kerosene up 6.95%.
    • Forex Rates – The Kenyan Shilling remained stable, with a slight increase in the USD/KES rate, which rose from 129.52 in May to 129.62 in June.

💡 EPRA’s pricing approach ensures balance between consumer protection and supply chain sustainability.

Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximise Every Drop

Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:

    • Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%.
    • Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
    • Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.

Looking Ahead to August 2025 Fuel Prices

Global crude oil prices remain volatile, with ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply concerns continuing to influence international markets. Foreign exchange pressure also persists, suggesting potential for further price adjustments in the coming months.

Industry analysts warn that additional price increases could materialise in late 2025 if current market conditions persist. We’ll be closely monitoring every factor that could influence EPRA’s next review.
