EPRA Adjusts Prices Amid Global Market Fluctuations
EPRA Announces Fuel Price Changes for January 2025
As Kenyans ease into the new year, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a marginal upward adjustment in fuel prices. Effective from January 15, 2025, the prices of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene have edged higher, reflecting global market fluctuations and local economic pressures. While the increases are modest, motorists and businesses will need to factor them into their early-year budgets. What’s behind these changes, and what could they signal for the months ahead?
Price Overview in Nairobi:
- Super Petrol: Ksh 176.58 per litre (⬆️ KSh 0.29)
- Diesel: Ksh 167.06 per litre (⬆️ KSh 2.00)
- Kerosene:Ksh 151.39 per litre (⬆️ KSh 3.00)
Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment
EPRA’s decision reflects changes in the global oil market and local economic factors. The reduction in Kerosene prices is attributed to a decrease in the average landed cost of imported Kerosene. Meanwhile, the stability in Super Petrol and Diesel prices suggests a balance between global oil prices and the Kenyan Shilling’s exchange rate against the US Dollar.
EPRA’s Pricing Methodology
EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers.
Why Should You Care?
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced an increase in fuel prices across the board, effective from January 15, 2025. This adjustment comes after a period of declining prices, marking a shift influenced by global market dynamics and local economic factors. Motorists and businesses should anticipate a slight uptick in operational costs during this period.
“The increase is minimal, but every shilling counts. I hope this doesn’t become a trend.”
– Paul O., Car Owner, Nairobi
What’s Behind These Prices?
EPRA’s adjustments are influenced by several factors:
- Global Crude Prices – Fluctuations in international oil prices have impacted the cost of importing refined petroleum products.
- Landed Cost – The average landed cost of imported Super Petrol decreased by 0.14% from US$612.53 to US$611.69 per cubic metre. Diesel’s landed cost increased by 0.06% from US$643.69 to US$644.10 per cubic metre, while Kerosene decreased by 1.62% from US$660.30 to US$649.64 per cubic metre.
- Forex Rates – The Kenyan Shilling has remained relatively stable against the US Dollar, mitigating potential price hikes.
💡 These combined factors have led EPRA to adjust the maximum retail prices for petroleum products, reflecting the current economic landscape.
Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximize Every Drop
Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:
- Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tires can increase fuel consumption.
- Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
- Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
