After a challenging month of steep fuel price increases, Kenyan motorists can finally breathe a little easier. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced modest price reductions for the period 15th August to 14th September 2025, offering some relief at the pump. Super Petrol and Kerosene are both down by KSh 1 per litre, while Diesel remains unchanged. The move signals a cautious easing for motorists amid shifting global trends.

    Price Overview in Nairobi:

    • Super Petrol: KSh 185.31 per litre ( ⬇️ –KSh 1)
    • Diesel: KSh 171.58 per litre ( ➖ No Change)
    • Kerosene: KSh 155.58 per litre (⬇️ –KSh 1)

Previous prices (15th July – 14th August 2025): Super Petrol KSh 186.32, Diesel KSh 171.58, Kerosene KSh 156.58

“It’s modest, but every shilling helps after last month’s hikes.”

    Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment

The reprieve is largely due to a slight decline in international landed fuel costs. Between June and July 2025, Super Petrol imports fell by 0.73%, while Kerosene imports increased by 3.20%, and Diesel rose by 3.08%. Despite some upward pressure on Kerosene and Diesel, the net effect allowed EPRA to reduce pump prices for Petrol and Kerosene. A marginal decline in global crude prices also helped balance the equation.

    EPRA’s Pricing Methodology

EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers and transporters.

    👀 Why Should You Care?

While the KSh 1 reduction may seem modest, it provides meaningful relief for motorists and households still recovering from last month’s sharp price increases. The savings are particularly significant for petrol users and those who rely on kerosene for cooking and lighting.

Diesel users, who include many commercial transporters and matatu operators, will continue to face unchanged costs, which may impact public transport fares in some routes.

    📈 What’s Behind These Prices?

EPRA’s adjustments this month are the result of several combined factors:

    • Global Crude Prices – Murban Crude Oil prices decreased from USD 67.73 per barrel in July to USD 63.62 in August 2025, offering slight downward pressure on fuel costs.

    • Landed Cost Changes – Super Petrol’s landed cost declined by 0.73%, Diesel rose by 3.08%, and Kerosene rose by 3.20% compared to last month.

    • Forex Rates – The Kenyan Shilling remained stable, with the USD/KES exchange rate moving slightly from 129.62 in June to 129.58 in July 2025, limiting volatility.

💡 EPRA’s pricing formula weighs international market trends, import costs, and currency exchange movements to protect consumers while keeping supply chains sustainable.

Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximise Every Drop

Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:

    • Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption by up to 5%.
    • Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
    • Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
