EPRA Cuts Prices for the First Time in Months
EPRA Slashes Fuel Prices, Bringing Long-Awaited Relief
Good news for motorists and businesses across Kenya—fuel prices are officially down. In its latest monthly review, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a reduction in the prices of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene for the April–May 2025 pricing cycle. After months of price stagnation and economic pressure, this drop signals much-needed relief for consumers heading into Q2 of the year. But what’s driving this welcome shift at the pump?
Price Overview in Nairobi:
- Super Petrol: Ksh 174.63 per litre ( ⬇️ KSh 95)
- Diesel: Ksh 164.86 per litre ( ⬇️ KSh 20)
- Kerosene: Ksh 148.99 per litre ( ⬇️ KSh 40)
Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment
EPRA’s decision to lower fuel prices this month stems from a combination of favourable global and local economic conditions. The most significant factor is a drop in the landed cost of imported petroleum products, driven by declining international oil prices. Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene all recorded reductions of between 4.9% and 6.5% in their respective import costs. Additionally, a relatively stable Kenyan Shilling against the US Dollar helped absorb external price pressures.
EPRA’s Pricing Methodology
EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers.
Why Should You Care?
After months of stability, EPRA has cut fuel prices in April—marking the first reduction since January. This adjustment brings welcome relief to motorists, transport operators, and everyday Kenyans facing rising living costs.
“Finally, a drop! It’s a bit of relief for my business.”

What’s Behind These Prices?
EPRA’s adjustments are influenced by several factors:
- Global Crude Prices – Lower international oil prices are reflected in import costs.
- Landed Cost – Super Petrol down 4.9%, Diesel 6.45%, Kerosene 6.53% over the last month.
- Forex Rates – The Kenyan Shilling has remained relatively stable against the US Dollar, mitigating potential price hikes.
💡 These combined effects allowed EPRA to pass savings directly to consumers. This framework ensures fairness—balancing imported cost shifts with local currency stability to protect both consumers and industry.
Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximize Every Drop
Even with stable fuel prices, adopting fuel-saving habits can lead to significant savings:
- Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption.
- Smooth Driving: Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
- Regular Servicing: Keep your vehicle in top condition to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
