The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced the maximum retail prices for petroleum products for the period from 15th September to 14th October 2024. In this review, the prices of Super Petrol and Diesel remain unchanged, while Kerosene sees a decrease of Ksh 3.43 per litre.

    Price Overview in Nairobi:

    • Super Petrol: Ksh 188.84 per litre (unchanged)
    • Diesel: Ksh 171.60 per litre (unchanged)
    • Kerosene: Ksh 158.32 per litre (↓ Ksh 3.43)
“I was hoping diesel would drop -mambo bado ni tight. But at least hakuna kupanda this month.”

    Factors Influencing the Price Adjustment

EPRA’s decision reflects changes in the global oil market and local economic factors. The reduction in Kerosene prices is attributed to a decrease in the average landed cost of imported Kerosene. Meanwhile, the stability in Super Petrol and Diesel prices suggests a balance between global oil prices and the Kenyan Shilling’s exchange rate against the US Dollar.

    EPRA’s Pricing Methodology

EPRA continues to monitor international petroleum prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors to ensure fair pricing for consumers while allowing oil marketers to recover their costs. The Authority’s pricing formula considers the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, taxes, levies, and margins for oil marketers.

    👀 Why Should You Care?

If you’re a daily commuter, Uber driver, or manage a delivery fleet, fuel costs are probably one of your biggest concerns. This month’s announcement brings stability for petrol and diesel users—while Kerosene users, particularly in lower-income and rural areas, get a bit of relief.

James Mwangi, a matatu driver in Nairobi, summed it up well:
“I was hoping diesel would drop—mambo bado ni tight. But at least hakuna kupanda this month.”

    📈 What’s Behind These Prices?

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) uses a transparent formula that includes:

    • Global Crude Prices – Slightly stable this month.
    • Landed Cost – How much it costs to import fuel.
    • Forex Rates – The Kenya Shilling vs US Dollar exchange.
    • Local Costs – Transport, storage, taxes, and profit margins.

💡 Kerosene’s decrease is mainly due to lower landed import costs, according to EPRA data.

Fuel Tips for Car Owners – Maximize Every Drop

With prices holding steady, now’s the time to optimize your fuel usage:

    • Keep tyres inflated properly.
    • Avoid aggressive acceleration and heavy braking.
    • Consider switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The global oil market remains unpredictable. While this month offers a breather, any shifts in OPEC decisions, international conflict, or currency fluctuations could impact next month’s prices. We’ll be back mid-October with the latest update.
